Following lightning-quick on the heels of my last post about books, here are what I think are the best movies, films, and flickies of the previous year. Once again, in no particular order, but all of these did come out this year.
Kick-Ass
One of the best comic-bok movies, and a great movie by itself. Campy and great and fantastic. Best part: the end fight with the bazooka, Mark Strong drop-kicking a 9 year old, and the jetpack.
Tron: Legacy
Wonderful followup to an original wonderful. I don't see how critics could pan this. Sure, it's a familiar story, but it's as fun as hell, and it's about computers, robots, and JEFF BRIDGES. Best part: Tron blinking blue in the water.
True Grit
Another perfect performance form Bridges. And from everyone else in that movie. The girl is fantastic, Matt Damon does great in his bit part, and it is probably the best Western ever filmed. Best part: either Mattie haggling with the horse dealer or Rooster's double-fisted solo horse assault versus four armed riders.
Black Swan
If Natalie Portman does not win the Oscar for her performance, there will basically be no reason for any talented actress to even try to do a great job with any hope of recognition for it. An extremely visceral film; it left me in tears by the credits. So damn beautiful. Best part: all of Act III.
Youth in Revolt
Went unseen by most people, including me, until I cought it on the Netflix. Probably Michael Cera's best film. fun, quirky, and intelligent as hell. Best part: every line of dialog that the kids spit out.
Inception
Yeah, I liked it, so what if everyone else did too? Best part: rotating hallway fight.
OSS 117: Lost in Rio
The latest in a series of French James Bond spoofs set in the sixties. Also, brilliant and crazy fun to watch, even through subtitles. Best part: tie between Hubert's speech to the Nazi's or his overt, blatant racism.
The Karate Kid
Although it should have been called the Kung-Fu Kid, this was still pretty great. No, no, it was. Believe me. Young Smith does great and Jackie Chan is fabulous as always. Best part: kicking that brat's ass with a broken leg, a ruptured spleen, and the loss of favor of the Master Karate Dragon (I made those last two up).
Easy A
Fun and witty, which says a lot for what passes as entertainment for the 13-21 target demographic. Pretty heavy too, but like Mean Girls it deals with the heaviness in a light way. Best part: Pocket Full of Sunshine.
The Social Network
Definitely an actor's film, where everyone shone brilliantly, yet what stands out as the most powerful part of the movie was the soundtrack. Trent Reznor rocked the shit out of this film. Best part: the twins rowing to an arrangement of Hall of the Mountain King.
